Each year, the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center compiles a report on Americans with some college but no credentials (SCNC). Below are five of the most interesting statistics from its 2025 report.[1]
41.3 million: The size of America’s SCNC population, with 37.6 million under the age of 65.
2 Years in a Row: For two years in a row, the number of students “stopping” out from higher ed dropped, while the number of re-enrollments increased, although the overall SCNC population has grown.
All 50 States: Every state in the union saw an increase in the size of their SCNC population.
Most Likely to Re-enroll: Students with at least two years of full-time equivalent enrollment prior to stopping out; or those closest to “the finish line.”
The Highest Share of Re-enrolled: Primarily online institutions account for a disproportionately high share of re-enrollees.
If you operate a primarily online institution, SCNC prospects should be your target audience. The statistics show they’re already enrolling!
